Simple, fair and fantastic support.

Rating: 9 out of 10
May 30, 2025
We use Akamai Cloud Computing to host web servers for web application purposes. We're currently supporting multiple different clients on a single linode and are scaling towards hundreds of thousands of monthly users. Clients range from WordPress installations to custom applications written in PHP and backed by MySQL databases, all hosted on linodes.
  • Simple and fast interface.
  • Fair and simple pricing.
  • Continuously developers their offering adding more capabilities.
  • Fantastic support.
Cons
  • Missing functionality compared to peers, for example DigitalOcean.
  • Historically used to lower prices regularly to stay competitive, not so much anymore.
  • Not very differentiated from similar cloud providers.
Great for cheaply and simply spinning up a cloud architecture for your application. It has everything you need: an API, Terraform provider, etc, that modern software companies need and rely on. If you're unsure how hosting VPS works, their support is speedy and helpful. This is a key differentiator. Pricing is very fair and competitive but middle-of-the-road. For a startup, it will suit you very well for a long time. It's a smaller provider with less reach than, for example, DigitalOcean. More tools are built with the assumption of DigitalOcean, AWS, GCP, and Azure, so relying on other tools might require a rethink. It might be less of a fit if you need big-company things like a swarm of consultants with certifications.
  • Was able to scale our company from 0 to hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue, even with challenging scaling needs.
  • Grew with our usage. Added features and capabilities as we needed them.
  • Their support was able to swiftly figure things out in times of stress and need.
It is more user-friendly than the big three cloud providers like AWS and GCP. The interface blows them out of the water; pricing is so much more competitive—no egregious bandwidth fees like AWS. As a small startup, cutting out the overhead of ultra-complex UI and pricing dramatically helps. It seems to be matched tit-for-tat with DigitalOcean, and their UI is similar in many ways. DigitalOcean has more mature capabilities, even though Linode/Akamai was founded earlier. Linode/Akamai provides better price-per-performance, though, as DigitalOcean is expensive nowadays.
I've asked many levels of questions. From noob how-to-setup-my-server questions to ask for more IP addresses and help in getting them set up. They always respond swiftly and relevantly. Compared to other providers, you have to bounce a couple of times with different levels of support actually to land on someone who _understands_ your problem. Other providers, even if they are actively having downtime, their support will respond hours later. Not Linode/Akamai. They are always there for you. They promise this, and they do deliver.

  • VPS hosting
  • File storage
  • Redundancy
  • Because of their good cost per performance ratio, we can utilise them more than other providers
  • They provide a breadth of services, so we could in theory switch all stuff to them, but the cost benefit is not yet mandating that switch
Been using them for over 12 years now. Very few issues, their support is perfection itself and they are expanding their services and improving their UI.

Pricing and ease of use are most important for us. We used to have all workloads on Akamai Cloud Computing, but ultimately switched most of our workloads to DigitalOcean. This was about 5 years ago when they were still Linode and still lagging behind, but now they are caught up. So we're definitely regretting that decision since DigitalOcean is too expensive now.
I'd look at the velocity of development and what new developments are being added. Many years ago they were stagnant, but now they are caught up and providing a great experience. They were/are not venture backed so they didn't need to do the pricing bait-and-switch either like DO did.
  • Implemented in-house
Yes
We've gradually expanded our use as we scaled our business. We were able to go from 1 server to 20+ servers seamlessly and cost-effectively. Can honestly say that ACC helped us build our business. We owe a lot to them.

Basically started with a server, that we either upgraded when resources were tight, or split up services to multiple servers when needed. Used Terraform to streamline things, but also images from their end.
  • We weren't too versed in linux and servers, so had to learn on the go. Their guides were excellent and helped a TON
Akamai Cloud Computing scaled with us. Never locked us in or took exorbitant prices. Using tooling like Terraform and Ansible really helped to streamline the implementation.
  • No Training
Yes, their UI is intuitive and their guides were an excellent resource to learn and expand our knowledge of self-hosting and securing servers etc. Their "Setup your server" guides built my Linux knowledge
With Terraform and Ansible it's easy. Lots of options in their own UI, and one-click-apps work great when needed. Can definitely set it up as you'd like. Specs can be upgraded and disk etc can be attached as needed.
It really depends on your own needs. Start of simple. Use the UI for setting up initial stuff, then you can upgrade to Terraform/Ansible/other solutions when needed. Don't buy more than you need since you can easily upgrade. Redundancy is good to build in as you grow so upgrading is simple.
No - there is no facility to customize the interface
No, we don't have that many important workloads on ACC and their regular support is great.
No
Our servers became unresponsive and we contacted support. They responded pretty instantly (other providers can take hours, days!) and instantly was talking to someone who new about servers and linux. We got commands to test connections on our servers and was able to provide great insights that helped us resolve the issue. It was clear that we were talking to a human, and not just someone copying and pasting responses from a standard form. 100% would recommend
Simple and clear, no BS interface. From a design perspective it's no Apple or Stripe, but it does what it needs without making me want to stick a fork in my eyes, like when being forced to use Azure, AWS or GCP.
  • Quick and easy setup of new VPS's
  • Navigation is clear and relevant
  • Given the nature of things, it does require some technical skill to know what to do (setting up servers etc)
Covers all bases. Fast servers and multiple regions. Can't say anything but good things here. Reliability is great as well.
Very little issues. Used to be more previously but in the past years don't have anything negative to say about them and haven't had any issues whatsoever.
Servers are well dimensioned and price performant. Of course one always wants more, so if they were to upgrade their hardware for the same price I'd consider moving more workloads. Networking - never had an issue. Hardware speeds - disks are fast and can grow to great size.
  • AWS
  • DigitalOcean
  • File import/export
  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
None in particular. It's up to your individual use-case. Make sure that your firewall and networking policys are tight so you don't leak anything important.
We did self-serve sales and that worked well.
Contacting their support was quick and easy. We never had sales calls or a dedicated manager with them.

Upgrading servers normally requires downtime, but also cross-grading can be done seamlessly. Plan for downtime, execute migration (usually quick) and preferably have backups.

Linode vs. Others - Our journey so far

Akamai Cloud Computing
5 years of experience
We have been using Linode to power websites, web, and mobile applications for our customers for around eight years. We have been managing Linode accounts for few customers and would strongly recommend any developer to start with it. The dedicated CPU plans are quite powerful and affordable, unlike market leaders stealing our CPU power. The addition of new services like Object and Block Storage really gives flexibility to developers. The upcoming Cloud Firewall and Bare Metal option would help us reach more Enterprise customers. The Marketplace library and Stack script options make Linode unique and customizable to spin an instance. Availability of Mumbai region in India has further added scope to our services. Hope we get more regions in India soon.
  • Dedicated CPU.
  • Developer friendly services.
  • Affordable cost.
  • Detailed monitoring and analytics.
  • Availability in India.
Cons
  • More regions in India.
  • Waiting for Bare Metals.
  • Email services would be great.
Linode perfectly fits any startup. Not just that, it holds true for design and development business[es] to manage their client’s websites and applications with ease. Scalability is never a problem with Linode. Having said that, a load balanced cluster setup fits precisely for any Enterprise requirements. The availability of multiple linux flavors also gives us an additional choice while setting up opensource applications. Though we are using few Linodes for email servers, we would love to have an email service from Linode. That would take off our worries about managing the email server and services. We had been receiving few requirements year ago on GPU based applications, which we weren't able to take up. Now with the availability of GPU plans we don't have to worry.
  • Has increased our revenue.
  • Enabled us to address more client needs.
  • Offers flexibility with plans to suit every need.
Linode stands tall for Ease of Use and Developer Friendliness. The plans and pricing slabs makes it tough to resist from competition. Also as we get what we are subscribed to, unlike providers like AWS stealing our CPU during high demands, we don’t face issues due to noisy neighbors. Apart from the above, manageability is good and better than other service providers. API also enables us to connect our account with billing system like WHMCS. This helps us to provide our client with direct access and control of their instances to our customers, and makes them happily use it. Backup options adds value to our business for customers requiring business continuity.
There have been very few times we had required the support. Most of them were spam or malicious code injection incidents which when notified helped us to resolve the issues. But the effort and concern the support personnel had during such times are really appreciated. We were given enough turn around time to fix the issues and revert. The fantastic KB has made it really possible to learn almost anything required to manage the instances without getting to reach the support team. And at times when we needed assistance, we almost had it within short time. We have also been assisted at times for very generic questions related to managing the instances, even though we hadn’t opted for Manages Services plan.
3
We primarily use Linode to host and manage our customer's websites and applications. Having said that, out support team and technical team used Linode for various purposes starting from Testing, Development, Deployment and Support.
2
We had been into hosting business for over 15 years, thereby have in-house talents required to manage the nitty gritty of hosting business. Though Linode is very simple, user friendly and easy to use platform, we are equipped technically to manage everything inside the servers created. Having said that, out tech support manage and optimise services like Apache, MySQL and support control panel like cPanel, Plesk and Interworx. We are one of the 10 Certified cPanel Partners in India.
  • Development and Testing
  • Production Servers for Customers
  • Managed Services for Linode Customers
  • The Marketplace Apps on Linode are extremely good
  • Overall experience of Cloud panel is great
  • Setting up Block and Object storage are simple and easy
  • So much of KB articles and extended Help articles
  • Bare-metal Servers once they are available
  • GPU for AI related applications
  • CDN services for Websites
In this eight years of being Linode's customer, there hasn't been a single day we faced problem. Even the migration or maintenance activities have been planned, organised and priorly informed. Kudos to taking care of even such small metrics. Though the instances are unmanaged, the support team helps with relevant document links, or their own articles that help us to fix or solve the issues we face.
Yes
AWS Lightsail and Digital Ocean were the two products that Linode gave a tough time to. The hidden terms and conditions with AWS and availability of better and easy platform than DO really changed our mind to give it a try initially, of-course with free credit. Since then, no turning back.
  • Cloud Solutions
  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
We are not a Datacenter expert, but have been in hosting business for 15+ years. That way, we need vendors and partners who not just push their product, but also help us give a complete solution to our customers. That way, Linode was amazing in terms of its simple though strong products, documentation and marketplace to explore and provide solution to customers, and a strong technical support team to help at any point.
No plan to change anything as of now
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was minimal
  • Getting used with the interface
  • Learning to use LISH console
We haven't faced any issues so fare related to implementation of Linode and are quite happy with it.
  • No Training
We got kick started with an initial walkthrough along with some free credits. The initial walkthrough helped us to understand Linode's ecosystem and start our hands on with Linode. We tried out some apps from Marketplace initially with the free credits, which not only helped us understand Linode better, but also those apps. We had implemented many such apps to our customers with Linode
Yes. Though the basic overview was provided, we were able to catch up with the system within a day.
As mentioned earlier, not just the user experience, but the extent to which we could configure nodes in linode is extremely important feature. From just selecting the operating system, zone, templates, marketplace apps, configuring vlan, IP management, RDNS settings, backup, restoration, migration etc plays a vital role in day to day server management.
I am sure, the linodes help documents and kb articles are better choice.
No - we have not done any customization to the interface
No - we have not done any custom code
All is well with Linode
No, we haven't purchased premium support. Since we have our in-house technical team which is experienced for year with hosting, we haven't made that decision.
No
It was a time, when we have issue with moving some instances from one account to another account. It was really getting a nightmare as we had been trying all ourself with manual migration by creating new server in new customer accounts. Then came their rocking support team, which gave us a clear way, and helped us to just move the entire instance from one customer account to another. It was a breeze and a great sign of relief to us, else we would have spent days togather to just get this simple task done.
Simplicity is the core of Linode, let that be the UX nor their products. I had never faced any challenge with using the Cloud panel not configuring products, right from the very first time. That way, i would say Linode's overall usability is the best compared to all the Cloud providers. It is simple, straight and developer friendly.
  • Creation of Nodes
  • Server management like stop, restart etc
  • Adding additional storage like Block and Object storage
  • IP and RDNS management is a breeze
  • Setting up backup to happen on specific date
  • Moving server between different zones as the IP changes
Yes, but I don't use it
I completely agree with the above statement. Linode provides the best option in terms of configurations and scalability. We have chosen share CPU instances many times and then moved on with dedicated CPU instances, just with a click of button.
We haven't faced any outages in service in past 8 years. Also, any important maintenance are informed in prior.
We use Linode for its Geographical presence across multiple locations. That way, we don't really face issues with it.
  • WHMCS
  • HostBill
We just used a ready to use Linode module from a 3rd party developer
We use WHMCS and HostBill only
  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
No
Customers are quite happy to use and mange their Linode from our billing system like WHMCS and Hostbill
All is well
From the first enquiry form submission to taking the first Linode live with free credits, the entire process was butter smooth and systematic.
The after sales support from Linode has been excellent so far
We wanted to become their partner to on board our clients are direct customers of Linode, and they were transparent and open for discussion.
Discuss with clarity
Yes
As we had been with Linode over 8 years, we have seen some upgrades in the mean time. They were all for good reasons to make the user experience better.
  • High Compute power are affordable pricing
  • Competitive pricing compared to AWS
  • Better IOPS on SSD for good read/write performance of database and files
  • Its time for revision with cloud panel UX
  • Mobile App would be a great idea
Yes
It was during the initial time when we decided to become a paid user after our free credit trial period

I'm using Linode's VPS services to host all my company and project websites. I chose Linode because they offer VPS servers on different locations worldwide. I had zero experience with VPS and their documentation made it relatively easy to host all my websites. I don't have to depend on shard hosting anymore.
  • Fast.
  • Cheap.
  • Expandable.
Cons
  • A little bit more support for website downtime.
  • More options/variations for the cheaper plans would be great (double my CPU currently means 4x more expensive).
Their dashboard and UI is really clean and works great. Everything you need to know about your VPS is there. It's easy to manage and upgrade your plan, domains and everything else. Their support is good and fast, although after almost 2 years I still don't know why my websites go down every now and then. Their support can't answer questions like this (somehow understandable).
  • Lower costs for web hosting.
  • Faster hosting means better SEO, more visitors and higher ad income.
  • Don't have to deal with shared hosting anymore.
I did not try or look into any other providers. Because of a client I knew about Linode and got familiar with their services, dashboard and support. I got a good impression and it was a no-brainer to use Linode for my own VPS needs.
Their support is fast. As mentioned before, a little bit extended support would be nice. There is a support forum, but topics often get no replies. A simple "we can't offer support for questions like these" would help a lot already, so you can move on and find help elsewhere.

We are a software company who uses Linode to host our own servers as well as selling the option to our customers to host our product with Linode.
  • Availability.

  • Ease of use.

Cons
  • Often takes multiple tries to reach a rep who understands (or pays proper attention to) a question/problem.

Reliability, options, global data center locations.

Pricey for for non-corporate/private use.
  • Uptime = confidence from our customers.

  • Slow or confused support replies lead to unnecessary delays and customer worry.
Base server options less expensive.
Mentioned previously: Often seems techs skim or don't understand the actual problem leading to delays. These were our most recent experience, but fortunately it was on a dev cluster and didn't affect any of our customers.
