Linode in small business
Overall Satisfaction with Linode
I use Lindode to service our DNS demands, Web Presence and Mail services. Being a small company we do not need the complexities or cost of Google or Office365. With the services we have from Linode, they are cost effective and put us in control of our own data, and allow us to scale up or down as our demands require. It is not a one-stop shop - it gives our IT independence and freedom back.
Pros
- Uptime - in the 4 years I have been with Linode I have not noticed any unscheduled outages, and the scheduled ones I do remember, finished before they were scheduled to, and did not have any major impact on services
- DNS - Linodes' management portal for DNS control is simple, easy to use and understand
- Tech Support responsiveness - they have always been very good at responding to support tickets, and I have found their support staff to be very very helpful.
- Datacenter Locations - they have their Data center locations in useful places around the world.
Cons
- I would like to see a weekly or monthly Backup provided as part of the monthly fee.
- Being able to scale drive space requirements a little better
- I can't really think of a third one, honestly - they give you a Virtual Machine and allow you to do what you need to do on it, and at a reasonable price.
- We have been able to scale up and down (due to Covid) as required very easily with very little outlay or changes to our bottom line.
- The fact of our ability to own the data on our server is more important than ever, because what is cloud based services but someone else's computer.
- And while this is someone else' hardware, its independently yours for the duration of your usage with them, your server delivering your data
- No locked in contracts have enabled us to be very agile in the way we operate
We chose Linode on a recommendation from a friend and we could don't be happier. We were sitting on three options, one was we put hardware into a datacenter and leased space, Microsoft Azure, and Linode. Ultimately we settled on Linode, it came at a spectacular price point for what we got. It gave us reliability and a Linux distribution of our choosing, It was *not* Microsoft, and any company that supports or at least uses OpenSource will always get my money in my personal view - but best practice does require us to review all options - but ultimately I am pleased with our choice to go with Linode.

Evaluating Linode and Competitors
- Scalability
- Ease of Use
Stand Alone OS install gave greater flexibility to do what I needed to do - no limits, and allows greater scalability as things grow and contract.
The simple pricing with that scalability was important to our needs so we were not going all in without the ability to remove our selves should the need arise.

At this stage, I don't think I would change the selection process if I was honest, there would be no need to - the services we receive were exactly what we wanted - and while there were others, they provide what we need.
A little un happy it got sold to Akamai but what are you going to do :(
