Overall Satisfaction with Auth0

Auth0 supports our Authentication and Authorization processes, since most of our web applications are configured to use the oauth2 flow with Auth0. The user provisioning process is done by using the Authentication and Management APIs. RBAC and User Management are supported by the Management API and Rules/Hooks we create inside the Auth0 tenant.

Pros

  • RBAC is simple, straight forward and easy to manage
  • Integrations of Social Login are simple to configure and the Auth0 documentation shows step by step how to configure it
  • Rules/Hooks provide customization to the Auth0 flow, making it a great solution to define how we allow our users to login into our applications

Cons

  • Backup policy! As of today, Auth0 does not provide a centralized way of backing up the information and users in the tenants. From a B2B perspective, this could be a great tool, because it would simplify the backup and data recovery process for the Auth0 customer
  • Import users as a strategy that creates a new user is weird, from a Data Recovery perspective
  • No dashboards to monitor the status of logins, users and data flow between web application and Auth0. This coud be a great tool to customize by our needs, as a way to visualize data and create reports
  • Improved SSO experience
  • Improved user provisioning with Authentication & Management API
  • Increased development time to generate reports and metrics from Auth0 data, due to lack of monitoring options within the Auth0 platform
It's a great tool to manage RBAC, but as a growing business, its lack of visualization (considering reports and dashboards) can be frustrating, since we need to check logs frequently. Also a lack of alerting to blocked users and suspect logins decreases the rating as it would be an essential feature to allow for a more proactive communication with the affected users.
Auth0 allows many other functionalities than the other products, such as customization of auth flows, emails, security options, etc. The Authentication & Management APIs also allow us to easily create and modify users, roles and permissions, by automating or integrating Auth0 with our own scripts and tools. Logs can also be integrated with other monitoring tools.

Do you think Auth0 delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Auth0's feature set?

No

Did Auth0 live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Auth0 go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Auth0 again?

Yes

Auth0 is great at RBAC, making it easy to create roles and permissions, and assign them to users. The Auth0 Pipeline and Actions are a great tool to configure and customize flows for users. Applications are easy to configure and have amazing documentation supporting the customers. One downside is still the backup policy and data recovery policy, which are not supported by Auth0 - it's the customer's responsibility to create a way of backing up data from Auth0, and how to deal with recreating all users.

Using Auth0

6 - Platform Specialist, TI Support and Customer Support - meaning only positions that may need to grant user access and configure its roles or give support to users that are experiencing difficulties during login.
2 - Platform Specialist and TI Support are the only experts in Auth0 that may tweak configurations or fix configurations in Auth0 that are not working as expected.
  • Provisioning access to user accounts
  • Update user's RBAC to applications
  • SSO configuration to our company's web hosted applications
  • Token personalization allowing the use of specific app_metadata info to personalize features in our company's applications
  • Bulk user provisioning to enable a smooth onboarding of new collaborators
  • SAML integrations
For our purposes, Auth0 is still one of the best valued RBAC platforms in the market.

Evaluating Auth0 and Competitors

  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
Scalability of applications and users were the most important factor in our purchase. As a growing business, we need to have the oportunity to expand easily the applications and its specific users RBAC access.

Configuring Auth0

Auth0 is customizable enough to solve most of our User provisioning, User Management and Identity Provider needs. Also, with a simple to use interface, Auth0 makes customization and configuration pretty straightforward. I dare say Auth0 is one of the products we use with the fastest learning curve for our new employees (in less than a week, most of our employees are comfortable using Auth0).
Auth0's documentation is really straightforward and gives many use-case examples. Auth0's Community space also has many examples and solutions to common problems. I would advise to check its documentation first and use a test-tenant to check the configurations and personalized options before setting a production tenant. Auth0 also send emails about updates and deprecations in its platform, giving time to adjust any features that may impact our applications and APIs.
Some - we have done small customizations to the interface - Very easy to configure small customizations, as there are key-value options to allow for text and fields, and custom CSS and images available.
No - the product does not support adding custom code
Besides Custom Flows (as in pre-registration, login and post-login flows) using Auth0 Rules and Login Page, no customizations were made.
