Our primary requirement is load balance and protect the exchange active sync and OWA requests. We were using Microsoft TMG server previously for proxy server to protect our exchange server. We recently decided to upgrade exchange server, but MS TMG server support has expired. I was looking for a solution that can provide similar solution as TMG server. While I was talking to a consultant, they recommended Kemp load balancer. On top of proxy server, I also configured Exchange with DAG, so we needed load balancing as well. We are using it for whole corporation, and it provides the business continuity.
  • Installation & configuration is really easy. The web portal is self explanatory.
  • The load balancing by Kemp for our exchange server is doing excellent job.
  • The tech support is par excellence.
  • The backup/restore feature is so simple. In case of failure, you can bring back Kemp in a short time.
Cons
  • I enjoyed the live logs and reporting in TMG server, which i miss it here.
  • The license file is locked with the MAC address. In case of restoring it on a different VM would cause issue.
  • The Web portal is sometimes looks more complex and confusing. It can be more simplified.
When it comes to load balancing the requests, Kemp is doing an excellent job. The intrusion prevention and web application firewall is another excellent feature. If your organization needs all these great features but in cost crunch, Kemp is the solution.
If tech support is more important, Kemp is the solution. I have had fewer conversations with their tech support, and they impress me every time.
If you need more detailed live reporting then Kemp is lagging there. If you are using virtual server then the restore is easy except the license is locked with MAC so changing licenses might be an additional headache. I just tried to transfer my VM from one host to another host, but it locked it due to MAC restriction. I called support, installed new VM and restored my configuration. I was up in no time.
  • So far it's all positive impact.
  • The cost of Kemp is very low compared to other solutions in the market, so ROI is really good.
  • For us business continuity is more important, which is provided by Kemp so overall the return is way more comparing the cost of the software.
We only used MS TMG server in past. The product is discontinued and out of support. It was our consultant who recommended Kemp to us. We trusted his suggestion and we don't regret it.
Yes
I was using Microsoft threat management gateway (TMG) server in past. They discontinued the product, so i was need of a software that can do something similar. During my conversation with a consultant i was introduced with KEMP. I talked their sales team and they confirmed that KEMP can do lot more than what i was looking for. I bought the software and never regretted it.

With my exchange server upgrade, i implemented it with DAG. Because i had 2 exchange, now i need a load balancer on top of my OWA and Outlook sync requests. KEMP has this functionality, and it's much cheaper so selecting it was a no brainer.
I think i have made the best decision so i would not change my evaluation or selection process.

The installation was straight forward. Once i installed it, their technical support team helped me with configuration.
We have 24/7 support with Kemp. I have used them on numerous occasion (day time, night time, weekend etc.) and they are always available and very knowledgeable. They are always willing to help with patience.
I have their enterprise license. I didn't purchase the premium support. With the support i have, most issues were resolved so i never needed it.
No
Recently, i needed to move my KEMP server to new VMware physical host. I was under the impression that i can simply move it and it will be fine. After i moved the VM, the license was not working due to MAC restrictions. I called their support, and they walked me through with installing it from scratch and restore the configuration from old server. This was done in a very short time. I was really happy with the support.
It serves the purpose for what we bought it for. We also got few more additional feature than what we had before.

Kemp LoadMaster is the undisputed King of Email Load Balancing

Our Kemp LoadMasters are being used as a High Availability Active/Passive Clustered Pair to load balance all On-Premises inbound SMTP traffic and email access across multiple protocols (ActiveSync, Webmail, etc.).
It's used for the entire organization's email.
It addresses the business problems of:
1. Having a single point of failure for email ingress.
2. Providing a simple, robust load balancing and mail routing solution.
3. Guarantees performance as a dedicated load balancer separate from shared load balancer equipment used for other business segments like web and application.

-UPDATED APRIL 2021-
After successfully upgrading from LM2400s to X3s and greatly leveraging Kemp Support throughout the process, with unique unforeseen issues that arose, Kemp Support very aggressively deployed their Support Experts to walk us through the cutover on multiple attempts until we were successful.
  • Provisioning of Virtual Services to Real IP'ed internal systems.
  • Detailed logging facilitating rapid and easy Root Cause Analysis of issues.
  • Extensive Online community resources and excellent customer support for issues.
  • Simple, effective and intuitive UI design.
  • Effortless manual failover/failback and upgrading procedures.
  • Provided meticulously detailed upgrade-in-place documentation for transitioning to new hardware
  • Pursued Root Cause possibilities of unforeseen upgrade issue/misconfiguration scenarios
Cons
  • Ability to 'clone' existing Virtual Services for rapid deployment of similar ones.
  • A better API for ease of automation.
  • Simplification of Certificate management.
  • Better explanations of Kemp implementations of industry standard protocols like VRRP (or CARP)
  • More control over device factory reset configuration and forcibly breaking HA pairs at boot time
Very well suited for On-Premises MS Exchange environments where uptime/availability and performance are crucial. Environments where high volume email, including mass-mailings are needed. Companies with limited or generalist Infrastructure team members with fundamental knowledge of the protocols, that need to be able to quickly implement and leverage an enterprise-class mail load balancing/routing solution without needing hours of learning curve time or training to do so effectively.
-UPDATED APRIL 2021-
Well suited for Highly Available DNS (Windows/AD) provisioning, which we plan to use very soon in the future.
  • It has drastically reduced time spent on mail chasing/delivery delay investigations.
  • It has greatly improved and modernized the mail flow evolution of our On Premise Email.
  • It has given the Infrastructure Team great flexibility and control over implementing different mail routing topologies for various segments of our business, particularly with Customer Communications and IT Development.
  • It has provided a robust, simpler & more affordable alternative to Netscaler or F5 for HA Load Balancing of critical internal & external business services
Although we use the two LBs in vastly different roles, the Kemp's architecture and interfaces are generally much easier and intuitive than the Netscaler's. Hardware/sw/fw upgrades and hardware migrations of the Kemps are much easier and straightforward. The Netscaler does excel in its online community and market share, but the Kemp's loyal following and devoted support staff make for a great customer experience.
Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Azure Active Directory, Barracuda Email Security Gateway, Dell EMC Avamar, VMware ESXi, Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365), Opsview Monitor, MS SharePoint, Source by IC Thrive, SolarWinds Web Help Desk (WHD), Windows Server, CentOS Linux, PowerProtect DD (formerly Dell EMC Data Domain), PRTG Network Monitor, Microsoft Teams, Pulse Connect Secure (SSL-VPN), Aruba Networks Wireless LAN (WLAN), Aruba Instant On AP Series Access Points
I think for the types of Kemp products we've utilized, and the roles we needed them for, the configurability is just right. I don't recall ever wishing that a particular Virtual Service had any missing features or settings available that it didn't already have. One minor thing it could do better is update/make notification settings easier to find and use more modern methods besides just email alerting (SMS?).
Don't hesitate to open a proactive Support Case with them, they will provide you with updated documentation and advise on any gotchas in your environment.
Research KEMP's implementation for VRRP (CARP) if you are using HA, in respect to your own upstream core or edge switch vendors for known issues (we discovered one during our project!)
No - we have not done any customization to the interface
No - we have not done any custom code
While needing to contact support for their product is rare, when we do it is always a pleasurable experience. Their Techs are USA-based, practical, very knowledgeable, detailed & responsive. The last time we needed their support the root cause actually ended up being unrelated to the Kemp LoadMaster itself, but an obscured downstream failure of our own equipment. The technician helped flush-out this issue via verbose logs and packet captures, explained why the Kemp was behaving as it was designed in this situation, suggested remediation tactics and still followed-up on his promise to keep the case open until we had implemented a solution to the downstream issue, and fully tested it with him afterward.
Yes
Because our company depends on the LoadMaster as critical infrastructure hardware.
No
The previous time I contacted support their Tech helped identify (via Verbos logs and packet captures) the downstream issue (invalid certificate path) with our own different equipment, and went so far as to help remediate that issue and test afterward to insure our equipment was all working as expected. He followed-up with a recap of the issue and gave steps to avoid the issue from recurring.
The full picture of easy, intelligent UI usability, robust performance & availability, simple service provisioning, detailed and useful performance metrics and logging, upgrade/maintenance ease, monitoring, online articles & active communities and excellent paid-support earn this product high marks. The simple fact that the uptime of this system is over 99.999% through its 7+ year deployment is testament to the product quality.
-UPDATED APRIL 2021-
On the latest upgrade project from LM2400 to X3s I was able to get acquainted and leverage the X3's Console menu, including a factory reset as well as the CLI. Both performed relatively well with the exception of a 'stuck' HA configuration that was only remedied by cold booting (warm boot was not fixing it). Kemp Support, as expected, quickly harvested the logs after we worked through the issue so they could analyze the Root Cause in their labs since it was recognized as a possible emerging bug on their end.
  • Hardware upgrade/Upgrade-in-Place preserving configs and certificates
  • VIP additions and monitoring
  • Out-of-box Setup
  • HA configuration in an Upgrade-in-Place scenario
  • Ability to change eth interface settings from console after HA configs applied
To put it bluntly, their support is perfect. Willingness to help, aggressiveness of problem resolution, attention to customer concerns, flexibility in staffing off-hours for maintenances, clear/frequent & timely communications and follow-ups, highly trained Engineers, forthright admission of product issues or limits, adherence to HA best-practices... the list goes on and on. Their support never fails to impress.

We acquired the Kemp LoadMaster initially to balance our Exchange multi-site environment. As time went on, we added other services such as RDP connections, online banking and other applications to the LM to balance the load which made our operations more efficient.
  • Load Balancing.
  • Vitual IP.
Cons
  • Allow the load master to create different DNS record types.
I would gladly recommend Kemp LoadMaster if you need an easy-to-use application to balance several sites and more.
  • Kemp has positive impact on our business as it made our operations more efficient.
The Kemp LoadMaster is easy to use and easy to configure. There are so many built in templates where you can complete a setup in a matter of a few minutes.
The support engineers are top notch - very responsive and helpful.
No
Last year I needed assistance with setting up RDS load balancing. I was unsure of several aspects of it but the support engineer Bill DeCastro took his time to explain carefully and assist with my issue.
